Thoughts on "What Oil is Best for my Vintage VW"? |
|
|
Oil has changed and you need to understand how... We are often asked what oil to use in an aircooled VW engine. Oil formulations are changing all the time, and it is difficult for the average vehicle owner to keep up with the changes. We used to recommend Castrol GTX 20W50 or Shell Rotella 15W40 for most aircooled engines unless they were recently rebuilt. They were good oil, easy to find and had good ingredient packages for aircooled engines. Recently the API (American Petroleum Institiute) guidelines for passenger vehicle oils have changed and some important lubricant and wear-reducing ingredients have been removed or drastically reduced from the oil formulation specifications. This is crititcal for aircooled VW engines and in fact all engines with flat tappet valve trains. The Hot Rod scene has been affected also. If you want to get maximum mileage from your engine whether it is a new rebuild or has lots of miles on it, there are steps you can take. The most important thing is to read the packaging of the oil you use, and be especially conscious of oils with the specification SM - these are the oils which are most commonly used for passenger vehicles and they are the oils with the new (lower ZDDP ) specs. If you have a newly rebuilt engine, selection of the correct oil is essential to protect your investment, as engine wear during break-in period can be drastic if you use the wrong oil. We are now carrying Brad Penn oils, which have high levels of the ZDDP wear-inhibitors essential for flat tappet engines. STP Oil treament (blue bottle) has high levels of ZDDP and is a good addition to your oil if you are not sure if your oil has "the right stuff" for your aircooled engine. The article in the link below explains the details of what to look for in the new oil formulations better than we ever could. |
