Installing a TYPE I (Upright, or Beetle Style) Thermostat Bellows on a Type IV engine (page 2)

Disconnect the thermostat cable where it connects to the air cooling flaps. The flaps actuating lever is located just in front of the aluminum cooling shroud on the right side. Loosen the small screw (7mm-wrench size) and let the cable hang free of the lever.

Working below the engine on the 1-2 (passenger) side, remove the lower air deflector. Remove the two 6mm nuts (10mm wrench size) washers and remove the thermostat together with the mounting bracket and cable. Now move to your workbench to remove the old thermostat and install the new thermostat on the existing bracket. Note the location of the various washers and spacers in the assembly.

Remove the spud on the new Type I thermostat. It is threaded to the bellows and held with thread locking sealant. Break the threads free and remove the spud.

Thread the cable through the thermostat spud, but do not thread it on to the thermostat.

Offer up the thermostat spud and cable to the bracket, fish the cable through the large hole in the bracket, then thread the spud on to the thermostat, using some blue loctite to prevent it from loosening. Complete the assembly by installing the 8mm screw and washers in the other end of the bracket then re-install the assembly on the crankcase. Leave the lower air deflector off for now.
