SOLD - 1978 California Westfalia

This is one of the best VW Buses we have ever seen in Ontario. Immaculate underbody, excellent interior, all optional items present and in great condition, fantastic original paint, and many sensible but low key upgrades including a solid state battery charger / converter, new propane tank, 3-point retractable seat belts, good audio system, re-upholstered seating and bed cushions.

We see so many buses that ‘need everything’, this is truly one that ‘needs nothing’ in order to be used. If you have been trying to find a nice VW camper for your family you know what most campers for sale are like these days - mid-price examples that have been used and abused, painted poorly, engines 'rebuilt', under-maintained, high mileage. And many of these are still selling close to $10K. This Bus is different and will not disappoint anyone who knows what they are looking at. Original paint is oxidized but will buff up very well as can be seen - we’ve buffed a few small areas as a test and the paint will shine beautifully once buffed. The body of this bus has a few dings and some patina but this is minor stuff in our view, overall the body condition is super good. The underbody of this bus is in unbelievable condition, not even showing surface rust - just the original paint beneath rubberized undercoating.

Mechanically the Bus is close to perfect. We have maintained it since it was imported to Canada 4 years ago, receipts are available. In it’s former life in Sacramento, CA it was well maintained also. Mileage is around 55,000 miles and the Bus drives as well as any we’ve experienced, and that says a lot - we’ve driven a lot of buses...

The thing about this Bus is that it isn’t quite a beauty queen, at least not yet. But as the saying goes "beauty is more than skin deep". It has some minor cosmetic issues - the oxidized paint and some dings, but all the important things about an old VW camper are nearly perfect on this one. If someone wanted to paint this bus it might be a shame to spoil the original finish, but you couldn’t find a better bus to restore because it’s so brilliantly dry and rust-free. It could be buffed and the dings could be repaired and preserve the original paint. The saying goes that a vintage vehicle is only original once, so in our opinion this Bus should not be painted but it's the next owner's choice as to what to do. In the grand scheme of things and this Bus will make someone very happy no matter how they decide to keep it. In a sea of modified, beaten down, rust-repaired vehicles, this is a low-miles survivor that is in drive-anywhere condition.
